Small and Simple Thing

It was all she had ever wanted

A small and simple thing

For her, no vast palatial place

Nor walloping diamond ring

Only this, pure lasting love of her

Tall-walking, plain-talking man

They’d lie ‘neath sharp stars

On hot sapphire-skied nights

Summers endless, cooling slow

Telling their dreams boldly-bright

Stories children might imagine

Spun in cotton candy fashion

They didn’t travel greater world

Sufficient was the one they owned

Costing handful of coins to spend

Long days at beach, breezy-swirled

They were adolescents

When he carved initials ‘mid tree’s bark

Joy swam in her eyes, evidence

His forever flame’s spark
